The purpose of using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is to restore normal heart rhythm in a person experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest. When the heart's electrical system malfunctions, it can result in arrhythmias, such as ventricular fibrillation, which is life-threatening. An AED delivers a controlled electric shock to the heart, which can effectively reset the heart's rhythm, allowing it to regain its normal function.

While monitoring heart rate and analyzing airflow are important aspects of patient care, they do not directly relate to the primary function of an AED. Additionally, the AED is not a replacement for CPR; rather, it works in conjunction with CPR to increase chances of survival. CPR helps maintain blood circulation until defibrillation can be performed with an AED, emphasizing the integrated approach to emergency cardiac care.
